Even now despite strict regulations and warnings from governing bodies like the HSE, things still go wrong for employers and their employees. In 2007/08 the UK working population suffered:
• Workplace deaths:
229 workers were killed in the workplace
• Workplace injuries:
299,000 reportable injuries advised to the HSE
• Workplace sickness:
2.1 million people suffered from illness caused or made worse by current or past work
• Working days lost:
34 million days lost overall due to workplace injury or ill health
These statistics from the HSE not only confirm the impact to industry as a whole, but also stress the importance of correctly implementing Health & Safety policies within your business. SMART-Health & Safety Solutions are health and safety consultants that specialise in supporting small to medium sized businesses who cannot justify the direct employment of a health and safety manager.
In our experience many SME’s do not fully comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 (HSAWA74) and supporting Regulations. In general most companies already know this. They would like to comply, but are concerned that once they attempt safety improvements they will open themselves to a mixture of diverse issues from their staff, reduce profits – and generally make life a misery all round…Which is simply not true!
Furthermore, many companies do not care for ‘advisor’s’ or ‘consultants’ telling them what they already know – and billing them for the privilege. They are irritated by those who sell by fear – claiming you can go to prison or incur massive fines. What these companies want is some help to comply, without messing about with their productivity unnecessarily.
SMART-Health & Safety Solutions are different to many other health and safety consultants and advisory companies – in so far – we get involved by helping you manage the introduction of safety. Initially we will start at a basic level of getting by achieving compliance with HASAWA74. Once clients understand the process they often request further improvements to their overall health & safety commitment. Our expertise is in evaluating the current position with respect to preventing injury and compliance, and to offer practical programmes to improve health, safety and environment performance. The practical programmes are based on a continuous improvement approach – commencing with topics of the highest priority and tailored to the resources of the client. The client’s involvement in solutions is paramount, and they can expect to do much of the work with support, and under guidance from, ourselves. We will work along with the client to reach a situation where they can have confidence that they will have done as much as is reasonably practicable to prevent injury to those in their workplace.
We were recently tasked with providing a fully workable Health & Safety Management system to a multi-site organisation throughout the South West. When producing a documented series of Health & Safety Manuals as part of the overall management system this can run into many pages.

Our written systems specific to you can be in excess of 1000 pages – and when we are retained to audit & review your procedures, we will maintain the management system by way of updated information as and when legislative, ACoP, Guidance, Best Practice changes are required, this will take place automatically
We make a point of representing the owner or director who employs us. We are contracted to assist your organisation when the HSE or the environmental health officer visits, and even when the insurance underwriters become involved in your business activities.
